Role Overview

  • The UK Strategy Lead develops, coordinates and drives the strategic direction of Volt UK, turning the party’s political ambitions into a clear set of priorities, plans and measurable actions. The role provides strategic analysis and advice to the Board and wider organisation, ensuring that political, organisational, electoral and communications activity is aligned around a coherent long-term strategy.

  • The role works across Volt UK and with Volt Europa to identify strategic opportunities and risks, build organisational capability, establish priorities and support the party in translating its values and objectives into an effective political strategy.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development & Implementation

  • Ensure full alignment Volt Europa Strategy

  • Develop and maintain a clear, prioritised strategy for Volt UK, with defined objectives, milestones and measures of success.

  • Translate the party’s strategic objectives into practical annual and longer-term action plans.

  • Maintain a strategic roadmap covering political, organisational, electoral and movement-building priorities.

  • Monitor delivery against strategic objectives and recommend changes where circumstances, evidence or political opportunities require them.

  • Ensure that major initiatives and projects are assessed against Volt UK’s strategic priorities before resources are committed.

Political & Strategic Analysis

  • Monitor the UK political environment and identify emerging opportunities, threats and strategic challenges relevant to Volt UK.

  • Analyse the evolving political landscape, including the positioning and strategies of other political parties and movements.

  • Identify areas where Volt UK can establish a distinctive and credible political position.

  • Prepare concise strategic briefings and recommendations for the Volt UK Board.

  • Work with the Policy, Communications, Community and Campaign teams to ensure political analysis informs planning and decision-making.

Strategic Coordination & Alignment

  • Provide a strategic framework within which teams and leads can develop their own plans and priorities.

  • Coordinate strategic planning across the organisation and identify dependencies, gaps and competing priorities.

  • Facilitate cross-functional discussions to build alignment around major strategic decisions.

  • Work closely with the Policy Lead to connect policy development with the wider political strategy.

  • Work with Community and Campaign Leads to ensure grassroots activity contributes to, and informs, the overall strategy.

  • Collaborate with Volt Europa to maintain alignment with wider European strategic objectives while reflecting the UK political context.

Organisational Development & Prioritisation

  • Help identify the capabilities, resources and organisational structures required to deliver Volt UK’s strategy.

  • Support the Board in prioritising initiatives where capacity and resources are limited.

  • Identify opportunities to develop strategic partnerships and external relationships that advance Volt UK’s objectives.

  • Encourage evidence-based decision-making, learning and continuous improvement across the organisation.

Democratic & Member Engagement

  • Facilitate structured strategic discussions with members and volunteers to develop shared understanding and ownership of the party’s direction.

  • Create mechanisms for strategic ideas and feedback from members and communities to reach the Board.

  • Support internal debate while helping the organisation move from discussion to clear strategic decisions and implementation.

Key Deliverables

  • A clear UK-wide strategic plan aligned with Volt UK’s objectives and wider Volt Europa strategy.

  • A prioritised strategic roadmap setting out major objectives, initiatives, milestones and measures of success.

  • A political and strategic landscape assessment identifying key opportunities, risks and differentiators.

  • An annual strategic action plan and regular review process for assessing progress and adapting priorities.

  • A strategic framework linking policy, communications, campaigns, community activity and organisational development.

  • Regular strategic reports and recommendations to the Volt UK Board.

  • A structured process for gathering member and stakeholder input into strategic planning.

Role Requirements

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to see the long-term direction while translating strategy into practical action.

  • Strong understanding of UK politics, political organisations and the wider political environment.

  • Experienced in strategic planning, political analysis, organisational development or a related field.

  • Able to assess complex information, identify priorities and make clear, evidence-based recommendations.

  • Skilled in stakeholder engagement, facilitation and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Strong communicator, capable of presenting complex strategic issues clearly to both leadership and wider membership.

  • Able to build consensus while maintaining focus on strategic objectives and delivery.

  • Comfortable working in a volunteer-led, fast-moving and evolving political organisation.

  • Commited to Volt UK’s values and to developing a modern, democratic and citizen-focused political movement.
